Kit Kat Cereal

 General Mills Kit Kat Cereal

I saw this at Target when I was over the border a few weeks ago and I had to buy a box to try. Cracking the box open you're hit with predominately cocoa with undertones of wafer cookies. If that didn't foreshadow the taste of the cereal I don't know what else could. This cereal was fine, and thinking about its delivery, I don't know how else they could've designed it. It literally just tastes like chocolate wafer cookies, it starts to get a bit soggy midway through as it is a wheat/rice based cereal which tend to take in milk/liquids quicker than their corn counterparts. I do like that they had the cereal 'segmented' into 4 like the iconic Kit Kat bars, but the cereal left me wanting something else. It was something to buy once, but if you're having a chocolate cereal craving, just go for the Nesquik. And despite the cereal being covered in cocoa, the milk hardly takes on the flavour. I really wish there could be more to be said about this cereal, but a Kit Kat it is not. What separated Kit Kats from other wafer bars was the amount of chocolate found on them, and as I stated earlier quite a difficult task to replicate. Perhaps instead of replicating the look of the Kit Kat, they could have tried to fill the cereal with chocolate to replicate the taste, but in this superficial world what else can we expect than this superficial cereal.

Post Honey Oh's!

Post Honey Ohs!

Cracking open the box you get a mild honey scent emanating from what lies inside. These giant Oh's are about the same size as the Oreo O's which makes sense as they're both made by Post so using the same manufacturing process just different recipe would be the most economical decision for them. I would have to say texturally they are slightly different, but I don't have a side by side comparison to confirm this. By different, I mean that Honey Oh's bring some serious crunch. Throughout the experience, bite after bite this cereal delivers on the crunch. This cereal is airy, crunchy, crispy, and in the middle in terms of sweetness not crazy sweet like fruity pebbles, but not like some cereal devoid of all happiness like Trader Joe's Almond Butter Puffs cereal (I tried it recently and was so disappointed I didn't want to do a review as I didn't have a box or picture of the cereal, but I might consider it just as a public service to warn you all). The little bits of puffed rice and oats are a nice touch to add into the centre of the Oh's, but unlike the picture on the box not every Oh is filled with this mix. Nearing the end of the bowl, surprisingly the texture is still there and you're left with this cereal milk with a golden hue. Drinking it feels like dessert, to put simply it's honey flavoured milk. Not overly sweet either and a good way to finish off the bowl. Overall I'd say that this is a cereal I'm not crazy about, but it isn't a cereal that you'd be disappointed to have in your cupboards. If you're big on texture, and lasting texture then this might be something for you.

IHOP Mini Pancake Cereal - Blueberries & Syrup

IHOP Mini Pancake Cereal - Blueberries & Syrup

This one I was pretty excited for, but to give you a TLDR before the review even begins I would recommend you try it once however this one isn't one you'll want to keep restocking your cupboards with. Opening the box you get some intense syrupy aromas coming through with a touch blueberry. The cereal itself looks like they took something similar to corn pops and just squished them down; similar texture and crunch, just flatter. Adding milk just intensifies the syrup flavours and the blueberries take a backseat. Note: these are table syrup/pancake syrup flavour not maple syrup. After a few minutes of eating the milk takes on a nice blue colour, but it doesn't help the blueberry flavours come through. It begins to get soggy a little sooner because of the larger surface area, but never did they go to mush like something like a mini wheat or the like. If you like syrup then you'll like this cereal. I feel like I've repeated myself a bunch of times now, but the blueberry flavour is faint, but present and another thing to point out is that the poptart style blueberry flecks of sprinkles on the pancake cereal don't really dissolve that well and it's a bit of a tough time scooping them out of the milk by the end of it. Post cereal milk kind of tastes like an overly sweet blueberry ice cream which was the best part of the experience, but not something to look forward to every time you pour a bowl. To give credit where it's due, they did a good job making it look like mini blueberry pancakes doused with syrup and thinking about it now this is very much just a cookie crisp base cereal with different finishes considering they're both made by the same company.

Kellogg's ICEE Cereal - Cherry + Blue Raspberry

Kellogg's ICEE Cereal - Cherry + Blue Raspberry

Very special thanks to my friend Matt for gifting me this cereal after I was cooking all weekend for his bachelor party weekend which I insisted on doing before anyone even asked. It was a great weekend and we had a good time with the lads. That being said, lets get to what we're all here for, the cereal.

First off, cracking open the box and opening the bag you're hit with a big blast of fruitiness, slightly sour, but mostly of cherry with it resembling very closely to cherry licorice nibs. Eating it dry the flavours are muted which are to be expected however something unusual occurs after you finish eating it. A cooling sensation wraps around your mouth and gradually gets stronger, but never to the point where you're wondering if you've just brushed your teeth. Adding milk to the cereal the colours really brighten up and the flavours come through much better or at least the cherry flavour is the more predominate flavour forward and blue raspberry can be detected in the background. The cooling sensation is still present and texturally they're very similar to corn pops or any other corn based puff/pop cereal. Cereal stayed crispy until the last bite with some evidence of sogginess beginning to develop near the end, but it wasn't at any sort of accelerated rate. Milk kept more of the cherry flavours over the blue raspberry and cooling feeling was still sticking around. Overall I really liked the cereal, but I kind of wished the 2 bags had separated flavours of ICEE's so that we could choose how to mix it ourselves like we could at the local convenience store or just have straight up 1 flavour. No puzzles for the kids on the box either.

Berry Berry Kix!

Sorry for no pictures, but this was an older review before I started taking pictures.
When I first poured it in the bowl it kind of resembled like colourful Captain Crunch but in smaller ball shapes. The smell when it was dry was mellow on the berry front. The colours were also a little saturated compared to the package, but I guess that's better than having extra artificial colouring added to it. I got some milk in there and had at it expecting my gums to be cut up in the ol' Captain Crunch fashion, but was surprised to fin
d out that these "corn puffs" gave in to my bite quite easily and without the sacrifice of a receding gum line. The flavour however was kind of bland, artificial and definitely not as sugary as I was expecting. As I ate it, the remaining kix that were marinating in the milk did get better, but only slightly and it kept it's crispiness rather fairly well.

Reader's Request! Throwback Thursday - Trix!

A little late for Thursday, but nevertheless I will be doing a Throwback Thursday edition of my Super Cereal Reviews hopefully once a month or more featuring older cereals we already know of and some we hold dear to our hearts while we were growing up. This month is Trix. Textures and lasting crispiness hasn't differed compared to Finding Dory however the aromas and flavours have changed. Trix had a mellower sweet and fruity nose to it dry and after adding milk it definitely helps bring that out more. The overall flavour was more fruity, but also had a mild generic corn puffs after taste. The milk carried more of the flavours than I had expected after my cereal was done. No puzzles on this box too. It seems that there have been many job cuts from cereal production to creative design since I was a kid.

I thought I would add a second picture to really showcase how big of a bowl I had. It was about half of the box. Trix used to come in different shapes to represent the different fruits that were supposed to be featured in the cereal, but now its shape has turned into boring generic balls. I've now come to realize the Finding Dory cereal is the same colour scheme as the Trix just with two of the colours on one of the puffs and the other two colours on the other puffs - way to cut costs! Trix isn't the same as it used to be. It's still a good sugary cereal, but doesn't carry the nostalgic weight it used to for me after eating it.

This time I'm going to review something possibly more directed towards an older audience. It's Oatmeal Crisp - Dark Chocolate Cranberry Flavour!

The smell as I poured it into the bowl was much mellower than Finding Dory and you really had to get your nose in there to smell anything. After I poured the milk in the bowl the smells opened up only slightly. From my first bite I was a little disappointed. The cranberries were much firmer than I was expecting - borderline stale despite the June 2017 expiry date. Also the chocolate flavour was pretty lacklustre these chocolate clusters barely packed a punch and what chocolate flavour you would detect was quickly overwhelmed by the work you need to put in the chew this plethora of cranberries found in the cereal (I guess a positive for lots of fruit?). The rest of the cereal was pretty standard oatmeal crisp. It wasn't overly sugary and gets soft at a fairly steady rate with the sparsity of granola clusters trying to mask the reality of a dwindling bowl of sadness. Box was pretty standard for something directed towards an older audience and slightly misleading with the cranberries shown on it were much lighter and fresher looking than was was really inside.
If you have any suggestions for future reviews let me know! I'm always up for trying new and different cereal.
